A love triangle waiting to happen, set in the mountain hot springs of Izu, Japan, My Darling of the Mountains takes place during the late thirties and brings together three characters, a stunning woman fleeing Tokyo, a handsome bachelor, surrogate father to his nephew, and a blind masseur. Why did the woman leave Tokyo, which of these two men will provide solace? This is a film noir disguised as an elegiac and lyrical period piece, yet it contains much of the signature energy and humor of Ishii’s previous films, The Taste of Tea, Party 7 and the groundbreaking Sharkskin Man & Peach Hip Girl.
